Ethernet Driver El Capitan

If the driver didn't work, please recheck your hardware and make sure your USB Ethernet Adapter has the same Product ID: 0x9700 and Vendor ID: 0x0fe6, as mentioned above. Please follow this steps: - Plug your USB Ethernet Adapter into your Mac USB port. Click the little Apple logo on the upper left corner and then 'About this Mac' from the. I have not tried to make this work in El Capitan. I am now using the app Serial. It’s not cheap at $29.99 (£22.99), but it works. I’ve not had any problems with any USB serial adapter (including USB consoles of Cisco devices) since I started using it. Highly recommended! Note from December 2015: You might try the driver from Aten. Dec 20, 2015 Update from Edimax: now the EW-7811Un also has a driver for 10.11 El Capitan. Ethernet and some sort of wifi to ethernet client mode.

Many Mac users were baffled over the weekend when their Mac‘s Ethernet ports stopped working. Thankfully, Apple swiftly published a support article about how to fix the problem. The culprit appears to be an update to OS X 10.11 El Capitan’s System Integrity Protection security feature, which accidentally disabled the kernel extension that manages the Ethernet port.

Apple pushed out a second update to the Incompatible Kernel Extension Configuration Data that should automatically fix the problem. But if the first update disabled your Ethernet port and prevented the second update from installing, follow these steps to determine your situation and fix it:

  1. Hold down the Option key and choose System Information from the Apple menu.
  2. In System Information’s sidebar, under Software, select Installations.
  3. If the listings aren’t arranged in alphabetical order, click Software Name to sort them.

  4. Look for Incompatible Kernel Extension Configuration Data. If the most recent version installed is 3.28.1, you have the troublesome version, and will need to force an update to 3.28.2. If you already have 3.28.2, as in the screenshot below, the kernel extension isn’t the culprit and you’ll have to try another troubleshooting method.

If you need to force an update to 3.28.2 and have a Wi-Fi connection, the fix is easy: Open Terminal in /Applications/Utilities, type the following command, and press Return:

sudo softwareupdate --background

You may be prompted to enter your administrator password. After that, quit Terminal and restart your Mac to finish applying the fix.

If you can’t connect to Wi-Fi or don’t have a Wi-Fi network, then you unfortunately have a more involved process ahead of you, detailed in the aforementioned Apple support article.

We’re happy that Apple addressed this issue quickly, but we can’t say that the broken 3.28.1 update gives us warm and fuzzy feelings for the state of Apple’s software quality assurance.

Problem

If you find that your Ethernet port has stopped working, it is because of a ‘silent’ update from Apple in the last week of February, which Apple have now fixed.

A kernal extension corruption

Solution

To do the following you’ll have to connect to your WiFi network….

Hold the ‘Option’ (Left Alt) key down and then click on the Apple logo in the top left of your screen.

Click on System Information, and in the left hand navigation window scroll down to Software (click on the triangle to expand it, it you have to), and then click on Installations.

It should be in alphabetical order, but if not then click on the Software Name in the right hand window. Scroll down till you find ‘Incompatible Kernal Extension Configuration Data’. There will probably be three listings from different dates. The last one should be version 3.28.2 and have a date from the 28th February onwards. If you have version 3.28.1 then you will need to update to the latest 3.28.2

Open Terminal (which is in Applications > Utilities)

Then type in the following command below exactly as you see it, followed by your admin password. You won’t see your password as it is permanently hidden, so don’t worry.

Another way is to boot to Recovery Console, by holding Cmd R when booting the computer and then reinstalling your OS. The Terminal route is quicker and assumes you have access to a WiFi network to get your Ethernet working again.
